When kids play, they remember. They may not be aware they are learning, but they sure are aware they are having fun. When you have a good belly laugh with your siblings or parents or friends, that stays with you. And the great thing is that is comes so naturally
if we only let it.

Social Development
|
The range of opportunities for the child with CP when it comes to play and social development with vary considerably depending upon the level of challenges the child faces.
Keeping things simple and structured is a good place to start Games with simple rules like a lotto game or Candyland-type game are examples. Practice with taking turns as in simple card games can also encourage interaction among children.
Activities which encourage cooperation and/or imitation can also be successful when there are sufficient materials for all to participate fully without a dependence of childrens willingness to share.
Roll playing and make-believe like playing house, tea party, store, dress-up and the use of doll sand in play may be very challenging to some. But if the child is given a script to play either by another child, sibling, caregiver, or parent, that script provides with the opportunity to practice different kinds of interactions in a non-threatening way. As they become comfortable with one script, more can be added or the initial one expanded upon to increase their repertoire of interactions, thereby increasing their self-confidence.
The company Learning Resources has fun products for make-believe that have teaching concepts built into the play - cash register, telephone, counting cookies, shape sorting cupcakes, mix and match doughnuts, realistic play food to name a few.
